Llanberis’ Journey Through Time

Take a walk through the rich history of Llanberis – a picturesque village situated between Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris, right at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon).

The vibrant heritage of Llanberis draws in thousands of tourists, with an average of 142,000 visitors to the National Slate Museum per year. So, let’s take a deep dive into the timeless charm of our Llanberis history.

Our Ancient Roots

The earliest settlement in Llanberis dates back to the Iron Age at Dinas Ty Du Hillfort. The recent discovery of Roman Segontium remains near Caernarfon – which is just a short 15-minute drive from our hotel. You can also visit religious sites such as the captivating St Peris church located in Nant Peris, only a 5-minute drive or 11-minute cycle away from Llanberis. Discover its fascinating churchyard and delve into the glorious furnishings such as the 15th-century roof trusses.

The Legacy of Dolbadarn Castle

Created as a Welsh symbol of power, Dolbadarn Castle sits in the grounds of the Royal Victoria Hotel and we can’t wait to share its enchanting charm with you. This is a must-see in Llanberis for its significance to Welsh history. Find out about the 20-year imprisonment of Owain Gôch, a claimant to the Welsh throne, and the myths and legends of children-eating witches and unbaptised baby-stealing fairies.

The Slate and Industrial Heritage

Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) is profound for its composition of rocks and minerals (Visit Snowdonia). You can explore the rise of the slate industry in the 18th and 19th century, which turned Llanberis into a thriving industrial centre with around 100,000 tonnes of slate produced per year.

Today, you can visit the Dinorwic Slate Quarry, that’s been preserved for hiking, adventure activities and an insight into the terraces, machinery and tunnels of the Welsh slate industry. The old machinery and tools of the quarry have merged with the landscape, mixing industrial heritage with nature. Protected by UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can tick one more historical landscape off your list.

Why not get involved yourself? Head to the National Slate Museum* in Dinorwic to visit the working waterwheel, attend Victorian workshops and watch slate-splitting demos to bring the quarry and its workers to life.

*Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the National Slate Museum is closed until Autumn 2026 for an exciting re-development, but you can explore “on the road” exhibitions.
