Our Rich History
The Royal Victoria Hotel is steeped in history, with the area that the hotel was built on inhabited since around 3000 BC. There are various sites across the area from centuries past, including the ruins of Dolbadarn Castle which is situated in the hotel grounds.
The hotel itself originated around 1830 and was built by Thomas Assheton Smith, the owner of the Dinowig slate quarries. Originally a ‘dwelling inn’, the site featured stables, coach houses, chamber rooms, lounges and lots more! There’s plenty of history to discover at our country hotel.
