Located in the heart of Snowdonia, the Royal Victoria Hotel is surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in North Wales. While providing our guests with a memorable stay is always our priority, we also recognise the importance of minimising our impact on the environment around us.
Sustainability has always been an important part of our operations, from eliminating single-use plastics to reducing waste. In our bedrooms, you’ll find refillable toiletries to save on plastic waste. Throughout the hotel, we have water bottle refill stations available for both guests and staff. We also prioritise recycling, ensuring that materials such as food waste, cans, paper and plastics are responsibly processed.
As we enter 2025, we’re excited to introduce even more initiatives to improve our sustainability.
What’s new for 2025?
Our previous boilers, installed in 2001, have seen their efficiency deteriorate to between 60 and 70% over time. This year, we’ve installed new boilers with an impressive efficiency rating of 95.5%. This upgrade will not only reduce our energy consumption and carbon emissions but also ensure we operate more sustainably and cost-effectively. We’re also introducing ‘housekeeping on request’ to save electricity, water and cleaning supplies. Guests who would like their rooms serviced simply need to place the request hanger on their door by 11 am each day.
Protecting Eryri
Every step we take toward sustainability is also a step toward protecting Snowdonia’s stunning landscapes. By reducing our environmental footprint, we can help preserve our natural environment, including the mountains, lakes and valleys of Eryri.
As part of our continued commitment to safeguarding the region’s future, we are proud signatories of the Gwynedd and Eryri Business Pledge – a collective promise by local businesses to respect, protect and enhance the area we call home. Through this pledge, we actively support responsible tourism, protect the Welsh language and culture, and encourage thoughtful visitor behaviour that aligns with the values of our community.
By aligning with this initiative, we’re not only working to reduce our own environmental impact – through initiatives such as refillable toiletries, water refill stations, and food waste recycling – but we’re also contributing to a wider movement focused on preserving the very essence of what makes Eryri so special for generations to come.
How You Can Help
We’d love for our guests to support us in our long-term goal of sustainability. Refilling water bottles and requesting housekeeping only when necessary are small actions that can make a big difference. Together, we can help protect Snowdonia and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
Here are things you can do to help make Yr Wyddfa plastic-free.
- No litter too small - Think especially about small items like wet wipes and cigarette butts. These build up over time and often cause the most damage.
- Plan ahead - Think ahead about what you’re putting in your rucksack and how you can make your visit plastic-free, leaving no trace of your trip on the mountain!
- Refill before the hill - Instead of buying single use plastic bottles, bring a reusable one and fill it up at the hotel you start your hike.
- Banana peels are litter too - All organic waste is rubbish and it takes much longer to bio-degrade on Yr Wyddfa due to the weather conditions and altitude. These waste types can also damage the local environment.
